Add movement and interest to your aquarium with barbs from Richards Bay Pet Shop. Looking for the right fish for your setup? Ask our team which varieties are available and how they will fit with your existing fish. Barbs differ in size and temperament, so these are general care tips rather than a guide for one identified species.
A comfortable home
Use an established aquarium with a working filter, swimming space and plants or other cover. An established filter contains helpful bacteria that process fish waste. Choose tank dimensions for the selected barb's adult size and activity level, not just its size when you buy it.
Keeping them together
Many commonly kept barbs benefit from a group of their own species. Ask us about the right group size and whether your tank has enough room. Mixing different species does not necessarily meet each fish's social needs.
Water care
Confirm the temperature, pH and water hardness needed by your chosen variety before buying. Keep conditions stable, test the water regularly and maintain partial water changes with appropriately treated water. Not all barbs have identical requirements.
Feeding made simple
Choose a suitable fish food with pieces your barbs can comfortably eat. Feed small portions according to the food's instructions and check that slower tank mates also get a share. Remove leftovers before they spoil, and ask about additional foods suited to the species.
Choosing tank mates
Some barbs nip fins or can overwhelm quieter fish. Check carefully before keeping them with slow-moving or long-finned companions. Other varieties have different temperaments, so tell us your tank size and current fish rather than assuming all barbs suit a community aquarium. Tank mates must also share compatible water needs.
Bringing your fish home
Follow suitable acclimation guidance and use a separate quarantine tank where possible. Watch feeding and behaviour as the fish settle, including chasing or fin damage. Let the Richards Bay Pet Shop team help you choose a variety and group that suit your aquarium before you buy.
