Planning a spacious planting display? Echinodorus grandiflorus is a large-growing sword plant that needs room to develop, rather than a compact foreground choice. Speak to Richards Bay Pet Shop about your intended setup before ordering, especially if you want to keep all its growth below the waterline.
Check space and growing method
This plant can develop growth above the water surface. Do not assume it will remain small or permanently submerged in a standard aquarium. Ask our team to confirm the supplied plant's identity, size and suitability for your aquarium or above-water planting arrangement.
Planting
Gently inspect and rinse the plant. If supplied in a pot, carefully remove the pot and packing material as appropriate to the intended growing method. For aquarium planting, settle the roots into suitable substrate while keeping the crown, where leaves emerge, above the substrate. Leave generous room around the plant and avoid crowding its roots.
Lighting and root nutrition
Match lighting to the confirmed growing setup and avoid heavy shade. Echinodorus plants benefit from nutrients available around their roots. Use aquarium-safe root nutrition according to the product instructions if growing it in livestock water. Keep ordinary potting fertilisers and treated growing media out of fish and shrimp water.
Settling in and maintenance
Confirm suitable temperature and water or moisture conditions with our team. Keep conditions stable and remove deteriorating outer leaves carefully without damaging the crown. Leaf shape can change as the plant adjusts to a different growing method. Avoid repeatedly uprooting it while it settles.
Livestock considerations
Digging or plant-eating fish may disturb roots or damage leaves. If your planting arrangement contacts aquarium water, ask about any treatments used on the plant and suitable preparation for shrimp or other sensitive animals.
Tell Richards Bay Pet Shop about your available growing space and intended placement so we can help you check suitability. Never release plants or aquarium contents into natural waterways.
