With its distinctive dorsal fin, the Featherfin Synodontis brings plenty of character to a suitable aquarium. This fish is listed at 5 cm, but that is its purchase size, not its adult size. Plan its long-term home before bringing it home.
Tank space and shelter
Choose a spacious, established aquarium with plenty of floor space, suitable filtration and secure caves or hiding places. Featherfin catfish grow much larger than 5 cm, so ask our team to check your tank against the supplied fish's adult space needs. Use smooth, aquarium-safe decor and avoid sharp gravel that could damage its sensitive barbels, the whisker-like feelers around its mouth.
Water care
Keep the water well oxygenated and conditions stable. Confirm suitable temperature, pH and water hardness before buying. Test the water regularly, maintain the filter and carry out partial water changes with appropriately treated water.
Feeding
Offer suitable sinking catfish food as part of a varied, species-appropriate diet. Do not expect it to live on algae or other fish's leftovers. Make sure food reaches its hiding area; feeding towards evening may help a shy fish get its share. Remove uneaten food before it spoils.
Choosing tank mates
Choose companions with compatible water needs that are too large to be swallowed. Very small fish and shrimp may be eaten. Featherfin catfish can compete with other bottom-dwelling fish for territory and shelter, so do not assume several catfish will get along. Tell us your tank size and current livestock before choosing companions.
Settling in
Provide a quiet hiding place and give your new fish time to settle. Follow suitable acclimation guidance and use a separate quarantine tank where possible. Watch its feeding and interactions with tank mates rather than expecting it to stay out in the open all day.
Not sure whether it suits your setup? Tell the Richards Bay Pet Shop team about your aquarium and livestock so we can help check identification, adult space needs and compatibility.
