A comfortable tank

Use an established, filtered aquarium with open swimming space and plants or other cover. An established filter contains helpful bacteria that process fish waste. Choose a tank with room for the selected variety at its adult size, not just its size when purchased.

Water and temperature

Mollies generally favour hard, alkaline water and a stable tropical temperature. Ask us to check the needs of the available variety against your tank's water tests. Use a suitable heater where needed, test the water regularly and keep up with partial water changes. Do not add aquarium salt routinely without checking suitability for every inhabitant.

Feeding made simple

Offer a suitable tropical-fish food that includes plant-based ingredients. Feed small portions according to the food's instructions and remove leftovers before they spoil. A varied, appropriate diet is better than relying on algae growing in the tank.

Choosing tank mates

Choose fish that share their water needs and are not aggressive or large enough to swallow them. Not every tropical community fish suits the harder water mollies prefer. Tell us your tank size and current fish so we can help you check the combination. Very small shrimp and young fish may be eaten.

Groups and baby fish

Mollies give birth to live young, so a mixed-sex group can produce babies. Males can repeatedly chase females; ask us for help planning the group and providing cover. Make sure you have room and a plan for any offspring.

Bringing your fish home
