Bring movement and interest to your aquarium with tetras from Richards Bay Pet Shop. Planning a community tank? Ask our team which tetra varieties are available and which suit your aquarium. Different species have different needs, so the tips below are a starting point rather than one care guide for every tetra.
A comfortable home
Use an established aquarium with a working filter, open swimming space and plants or other cover. An established filter has helpful bacteria that process fish waste. Choose tank dimensions for the selected species' adult size and activity level.
Keeping them in a group
Many commonly kept tetras do best with companions of their own species. Ask us how large a group your chosen variety needs and whether your tank has enough space. A mixture of different tetra species should not be assumed to replace a suitable same-species group.
Water and temperature
Check the right temperature, pH and water hardness for the specific tetra before buying. Keep conditions stable, test the water regularly and carry out partial water changes using appropriately treated water. Do not assume every tetra shares the same water requirements.
Feeding made simple
Choose a suitable fish food with pieces small enough for your chosen tetra to eat. Offer small portions according to the food's instructions, check that all fish get a share and remove leftovers. Ask our team about additional foods appropriate to the species.
Choosing tank mates
Look for companions with compatible water needs and temperaments. Avoid fish large enough to swallow your tetras. Some tetra varieties may nip fins, so check before mixing them with slow-moving or long-finned fish. Tell us your tank size and current livestock so we can help assess the combination.
Bringing your fish home
Follow suitable acclimation guidance and use a separate quarantine tank where possible. Watch feeding and behaviour as the fish settle. Ask the Richards Bay Pet Shop team to help you choose a species, group size and setup before you buy.
